An Idiot Abroad- How did the show reflect on your country??

The show, featured on SKy1, charts Karl Pilkington's reaction when visiting the New Seven Wonders of the World.
He visits China, India, Jordan, Mexico, Egypt, Brazil & Peru. although the the Colosseum in Rome are considered one of the New Wonders, instead Karl visits Egypt.
Baring in mind that for entertainment purposes Pilkington was put in the worst possible situations in each country, how do you feel the show presented your Country?
Have you seen or been in any of the same situations when traveling?

Re: An Idiot Abroad- How did the show reflect on your countr

I don't think it's "Pilkington was put in the worst possible situations in each country." Many of the things he's put in is just normal daily life or events of the locals. His comments, on the other hand, are socially idiotic and "red-neck". He has no appreciation for different cultures and he goes around those destinations as if he's still in his own little-corner of an apartment.

      Ricky Gervais says Pilkington is a "Moron...He's a round, empty-headed, chimp-like, mank, moron. Buffon. Idiot...and he's a friend."

In similar tone, Stephen Merchant says, "We often describe him as being like somekind of real-life Homer Simpson. Homer is small-minded, petty but at its core a good person."

The show represents the countries interestingly actually. It's Pilkington who nitpicks every little thing and turns an otherwise great trip into an arduous, negative, and most-likely meaningless experience. Had the host been a different person (say, perhaps Megan McCormick, Ian Wright, John Cleese or Rudy Maxa), the show maybe a fun adventure program. However, since the host is this Pilkington character, the show serves as a 'mirror' to others who lack cross-cultural-competence and social grace (just like Pilkington).

I have met many people who behave somewhat like him. Many of them pay thousands of dollars to go to China or the US (or other places around the world) and have been briefed about what the tour would be like, the itineraries and destinations they would visit. But, instead of trying to maximize what they've paid for, they want to change all the schedules and ruin the tour for everyone else. They don't listen to the local stories that the tour guide gave us (preferring sleeping on the bus) and they just want to snap a few pictures to prove that they've visited those locations.

Instead of enjoying the local activities/destinations/history in the tours they're in, all they want to do is staying at the the hotels, doing all-day shopping trips or going to the casinos all day. I mean, they can do most of those things in the comforts of their homecities. Why bother spending extra hundreds/thousands of dollars just to experience things they find uninteresting? Their actions don't make sense economically and they make other people in the group trip really annoyed.

He's one of the funniest men to ever walk the earth. I think he's absolutely brilliant.

He's also not as stupid as some people might think he is. Karl Pilkington is merely playing a character just like Rowan Atkinson does with Mr.Bean and Rowan Atkinson is considered someone who posses great intelligence.

I find it incredibly interesting that behind their comedy genius. They can surprise you with the kind of person they really are.

True! He does come out with a few interesting facts and thoughts from time to time. Especially the episode in Jordan, when he said how it was better to be living in the cave and looking at the palace, rather than living in the palace and looking at the cave.

But he is brilliant to watch, he is very entertaining! Although small minded, he is just out of his comfort zone

To be completely honest, I have absolutely no clue. Some providers show a "BBC" channel of sorts, but it's not every interesting. It's like every other channel pretty much, only it shows people with accents. Some stations may show some foreign shows, but not many.

But I don't watch much TV, some I'm pretty clueless.
