  • Does Putin plan another land grab in Belarus this time?

    https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2019/...e-brink-a64963

I'm not an expert in the issue but from what I get the Kremlin has over the last year created economic pressure, bye closing the Russian market for Belarus fruit and vegetables and stopped most of the subsidized programs to support Belarus economicaly.
They have also actively tried to beef up Russian identity bye pushing different Russian traditions. One such example would be certain traditions on may 9th victory day in Europe.

President Lukashenko has tried to compensate for the financial loss bye opening the country more to the EU. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has started to invest in Belarus recently to help them out. Lukashenko also has met Austria's Sebastian Kurz last month where he stated that his country wants more cooperation and that the EU is a beacon for stability in the world that if anything needs to be reformed but can never be allowed to collapse. He praised the organization overwhelmingly which could mean that....well I think he's testing if he could get some backup.

In case of he kremlin it would make perfect sence. Since the pension reform and the increased costs for fuel and the still ongoing sanctions, Putin hasn't been all that popular recently.
So he could search for a posibility to play the crimea 2.0 card to have gullible pensioners and overly patriotic 3/4 nazis vote him again

"Last summer, in a small town overlooking the Russian border, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko made a stark and pointed pronouncement. “If we don’t survive these years—if we fail,” he said, “it means we will have to become part of some other state, or they will simply wipe their feet on us. God forbid they unleash another war, like in Ukraine.”"

The video is in Russian in unfortunatly but Russian falk migth learn some interesting facts

The alliance between the German shepherd with the French cat will not succeed.
Belarus wants to be under Trump shoe.
Putin will not let that happen as happened with Ukraine.

yeah correct that is the question that is supposed to be discussed here. Is that schoolyard bully gonna annex a neighbouring country again?

I don't know which one that would be. The Euroasian union is just a very lose trading block. You can still intruduce tariffs and stuff on other members of the organization as you can see.
It's not as close as the EU and not even as close as the EU's precursor the European economic community.

They were initially associated cause Lukashenko hoped to follow after drunkard Boris Yeltsin has bid the dust. So he initially wanted to merge with Russia and become president of the state. But since Putin is around he is associated with Russia cause Putin migth try some funny business if he gets to close to Europe.
This logic doesn't work now anymore, cause if Putin plans something anyways...no point to stay associated to Russia. He needs to look for someone to save his arse
