  • Religious Parody

Hi All, I have started a youtube channel called The Rational Guard. It has many purposes, including exposing problems in ideologies, such as religions. Here is my latest video. I would be interested in peoples feedback. As well as parody, I would like to do some serious videos including dialogue with religious people. My guiding philosophy is that you can disagree completely wit someones ideology, eg religion yet still have friendly conversations.

    Here is my latest video

I found your video disappointing, sorry. It wasn't funny. I was expecting a parody of an American fire & brimstone preacher. That would have been funny and a real parody. The news format doesn't work for this subject or for what you wanted to do. I suggest you watch parodies on YouTube such as AwakenWithJP and others. They should be easy enough to find.

Fair enough. That format doesn't work for everyone. Godslaw might be closer to what you expected thought maybe you just don't like my style of humour!

Hi Jamie, your video is hilarious and the format is perfect, not only that it is pretty accurate regarding your point

Take no real notice of TDLCVI feedback (The dull lonely canadian village idiot) who said your work was disappointing or any feedback from him at all, he is a proven hypocrite liar fake and a total laughing stock here, he hangs out around this Religious forum like a bad smell and is as welcome as a pedo outside a primary school Here let me give you an example why he thinks he is some sort of authority on anything and all religious subjects....

"Yes. I’ve had two dreams that were direct messages from God. The first was what turned me from a firm atheist to a believer overnight, in my sleep. I was 44 and the very last thing I wanted was to become a Christian"

Keep up the good work and never let hypocrites like the above mentioned put you off and by all means post your new work here, I will look forward to looking at them

        Lol.

          Thanks Mate!

I'm just starting to put myself out there so its good to get positive feedback. Negative feedback will come so it's perhaps good exposure therapy!

            You're welcome mate.

You continue putting yourself out there and by all means be prepared to acknowledge negative feedback, however bear in mind most people that try and stifle artistic freedom when it comes to religious satire have an ulterior motive so don't be fooled by the sly passive aggressive negative nature of these comments, like the poster/s in question if you look further in to it you may find they are completely worthless and only wish to silence you

I laughed seeing "Africa", reminds me of some channels from a certain country. Sadly, I was expecting a flat earth rather than a spheric one during the opening/ending but it was enjoyable anyway.

Another remark I would make is that I have the feeling that this format will reach its limits quickly. Maybe a kind of reportage/"documentary" on a certain aspect of a religion (or atheism, let's laugh about it too) or something would fit better the topic? That's rather a question than a real suggestion since you might have ideas to keep going with the news format.

I generally agree with you although I didn't laugh at anything, perhaps because I'm older and have seen such stuff before. It's old news to me. I suggested Jamie look at AwakenWithJP because this YouTuber has a whole series making fun of our dearest & closely-held beliefs, be they about yoga, capitalism, socialism, religion, vegetarianism, being young, getting old, atheism, spirituality...nothing is sacred to him. Nothing at all. Here he is in a short clip making fun of Christmas:

JP has a deadpan humor which may not appeal to some. It appeals to me because I agree with him making fun of all aspects of human silliness. It's quiet sarcasm...

I have watched a bit of JP, I understand he is immensely popular but I don't really find him deeply funny.

                    Thanks.

I'm not sure if I will return to that format. I tend to like experimenting with lots of different styles and ideas. I'm working on some pseudoscience stuff at the moment and also more serious philosophical videos.

First comment - not appropriate at all to spam videos as an OP (or anyone else for that matter). It pissed me, and almost certainly others, off that you have to resort to this shit.

Now, having said all that, you're probably the first person I've ever seen on the forum who has spammed something that was actually worth looking at - in contrast to bullshit peadogologically useless "English lessons", links to headbanger sites extolling peadophile Muhammad, fundie Xstian webpages complements of "praise the lord and send me the money so that I can buy a car like Jesus wants me to own" types and so on.

What makes your newscast very funny is the accuracy of your satirisation of Christianity and associated theology. The piss-take on the British royal family was also very funny - dressing up the interviewer in a blue frock (= dress for the NonAussies here) was brilliant.

There are a quite a few things in your humour that might have slipped past the non-Aussies in your audience which were absolutely piss-funny - such as the parody of typical news broadcasts from 7, 9 and 10 complete with exciting end of newscast footage of a roo doing next to nothing.

I'm guessing so far that you have probably been influenced by Norman Gunston aka Gary McDonald (who was blatantly ripped off by Sasha Cohen aka Borat) and Shaun Micallef (probably one of the best living comedians in the world presently).

A certain poster shooting off his mouth about you is a well-known bluff and bullshit merchant around here (already touched on by another poster). He's been caught out quite a few times with very humourous results. I think that in your video, you've demonstrated a better knowledge of Christianity than what this would be if he could be has thus far on the forum. But I must thank him for his highly critical post about your video - I knew at that point that there was something good about it so I decided to take a look at it

If you are up for extreme sports and feel like promoting Youtube channels without resorting to spamming forums, you can do no better than to do a bit of research on Islam and report on that. The source material of the Quran and Hadiths is at times far far funnier and more copious than anything that you will see in the Bible. It's also relatively unexplored comedy territory - even South Park has hardly touched on its potential. There was only one genuine attempt that I know of to accurately satirise what is in Islam. That was "Innocence of Muslims" it was a real riot when it was released - or 20.

By the way, my old man's mob are originally from around Byron. I'm up for a swim at Broken Head or even Watego's around from the light house at the moment - given that I'm freezing me bum off right now in Europe.

No, JP isn't "deeply funny". He's irreverent. He respects nothing. He pokes fun at anything that becomes popular in society, anything that people start to idealize. Behind his tongue-in-cheek, jaundiced eye look at our society is a deep understanding of human nature. We are very good at idealizing a whole bunch of things from diets & fads, to people & pets, to ideas & ideologies. This seems to be part of our nature: we want to look up to something, to believe in it.

It's impressive that you have put together a YouTube video, so congratulations for that. The video as it stands is preaching to the converted. If your intended audience are hard-line atheists, then it's OK.

You also stated that you wanted to "...do some serious videos including dialogue with religious people." I'll be looking for those.

I didn't realise that it would piss people off. I know I am trying to promote my video but I thought it was within the rules as it was relevant to religion. It's one of those things where
I'm not so familiar with Garry McDonald, I know who he is of course. I'm a great fan of Shaun Micallef so no doubt I was channeling a bit of Shaun!

Yeah, about Islam. Not fully game yet to go all out yet given the potential fallout though I am courting the idea. There are a few ex-muslims doing parody, notable Veedu vidz.

He's neither funny nor original nor for that matter insightful. Merely changed the costume trying to play long-haired hippy. But of course it resonates very well with you - you also like to talk loads of completely unoriginal regurgitated shit without any substantiation. Wow, look! How coincidental...

Oh, he's trying to be a comedian. His major problem is that he is simply not funny.

But funny enough, when people are irreverent towards you - such as asking you to substantiate your offered opinions when you are smugly expecting people to nod, smile and say "that's deep" - then you start throwing temper tantrums. Does that make you a hypocrite for finding "JP" funny in part because he's irreverent yet you can't handle this when directed at you, or is this pure unadulterated irony?

You left out cars and your religious views in that list, not to mention, among other things, lying and deceiving about yourself and your "experiences" so as to present a better image of yourself with forum readers

Ummmm no - the news cast was littered with biblical references, the sorts of ones you try desperately to stop getting mentioned in any discussion or debate. You know, the sort of thing that if you look it up you actually discover that the Bible actually talks about. Rather makes your job of getting converts to Christianity via private messaging difficult, doesn't it?

"hard-line Atheist" = RogerRabbit's doublespeak for "Atheists who actually bring up evidence directly from religious dogma demonstrating fallacies in religious viewpoints".

In any case, the video is merely and essentially refuting the Abrahamic version of God - which of course doesn't make it purely Atheistic per se. He also did a good line on Anti-royalty as well, if you were watching closely, among many other things....

"dialogue with religious people" = RogerRabbit doublespeak for "blah blah verbal masturbation on each side without actually getting into any real depth". Naturally, you'll be seeing if there are genuine questions that put religious people on the spot during such dialogue...

But of course we know that you are not interested in genuine dialogue where difficult questions get asked by both sides. Here's a classic example of that:
